Weirich, John P. (21 Dec 1867 - 28 May 1929)

Owen, Clark County, Wis. and the community at large today are mourning the loss of one of its most highly respected citizens, in the death of John P. Weirich, which occurred shortly after 11 o'clock Tuesday morning. His passing came as a severe shock to all for he passed away while seated in the office of Dr. B. H. Dike, at which place he and Mrs. Weirich had gone only a few minutes previous, for him to have another medical examination. He had just walked from his home to the office, and seemed to be improving since he was forced to leave his duties at the store on Thursday of last week.

Early in the spring he suffered a heart attack which confined him to his bed ofr a number of days, and on Thursday of last week, not feeling any too strong, went to his home to rest for a while, and since then his decline has been rapid. The second attack was more than his heart could stand, which followed his walk over the doctor's office.

John P. Weirich was born Dec. 21, 1867 in the town of Sumpter, Sauk County, Wis., where he spent his boyhood days. At the age of 21 years he left his home and went to Superior where he spent several months. On his return he was employed as clerk in the general store of Jacob Hatz at Prairie du Sac, Wis., which position he held for eight or nine years.

October 24, 1895, he was married to Clara B. Page. One daughter was born to them, who preceded her father in death six years ago, at the age of twenty-seven.

Mr. Weirich came to Owen in 1902. He was employed as manager in the John S. Owen Lumber Co. Store. In 1906 he, in company with William Griebenow, established the present hardware and furniture business, which was later conducted by Mr. Oscar Griebenow and Mr. Weirich, and is known as the Griebenow-Weirich Co.

He was a member of the school board for ten years, also a member of the city council for a number of years. He has been chief of the city fire department since its organization.

Mr. Weirich was a charter member of the Masonic Lodge of Owen, and also a member of the M. W. A. and of the K. of P. Lodges.

He was a most highly respected citizen and will be missed in business circles and the general welfare of the community.

Besides his wife, he is survived by four sisters and two brothers, Mrs. Fred Steuber, Mrs. B. E. McCoy, Mrs. Urban Mather of Prairie du Sac, Wis., Miss Effie Weirich of Madison, Wis., Albert Weirich of Baraboo and Arthur Weirich of Prairie du Sac, and many other relatives and friends.

The remains will lie in state today at the Community Hall from 10 o'clock a.m. to 1 o'clock p.m. Services will be held at the Episcopal Church at 2 p.m., Rev. W. F. Taylor officiating.

Early Friday morning the remains will be taken to the M. E. Church at Baraboo, where services will be conducted by the Masonic Lodge of Owen, who will attend in a body. Interment will be made in the Sauk Prairie Cemetery in the family lot. Sympathy is extended to the bereaved wife and relatives.

Those from away who have come to be with Mrs. Weirich are Mr. and Mrs. Peter Gruber, a sister of Mrs. Weirich and Mr. and Mrs. B. E. McCoy, a sister of Mr. Weirich of Prairie du Sac, they arriving late Tuesday afternoon.
