C. A. JOHNSTON 84, OF HIXON, PASSED AWAY

Funeral Service Will Be Conducted Saturday From Funeral Parlors

C. A. Johnston, prominent figure, not only in his home vicinity but throughout Clark County, passed away at his farm home in the Town of Hixon this afternoon. He was 84 years of age.

Mr. Johnston had been in extremely poor health for the past three years sometimes being seriously ill, but the determinination that was so pronounced in his physical make-up throughout his entire life, was sufficient to allow him to rally back enough strength so that he would recover and gain adequate strength to enable him to get about and take care of business matters and visit with his many friends in the vicinity of Owen and Withee.

Just about a week ago, he enjoyed a drive to Owen and Withee.

Just about a week ago, he enjoyed a drive to Owen and although he did not feel quiet up to walking about the streets and visiting all of his usual stoops he did enjoy visiting with a few friends whom he saw pass by while he sat in his car. The past week however, he had been seriously ill with pneumonia which proved fatal to him.

Charles Allen Johnston (commonly known to everyone as C. A.), was born on December 18, 1858, at Bolivar, Pa., and as a child moved with his parents to Ontario, Canada, where he spent his childhood and young manhood days. While living in Canada he met and married Mary Mathers on May 23, 1883. The couple returned to the United States after their marriage and settled in Michigan where they established their home among strangers. With industrious minds and determination they built a true foundation for a fine home. After spending several years in upper and lower Michigan and northern Wisconsin the Johnston family moved to Clark county in 1910 and settled on a farm in the Town of Hoard which they later sold to Clark County and is now a part of the Clark County hospital property. In 1923 they family moved onto their present farm in the Town of Hixon where they have since resided.

Since coming to Clark County in 1910, C. A. Johnston had a great and constructive career as a public spirited citizen. For years he served on the Clark County Board of Supervisors, and was chairman of the Township of Hixon. He fought for the affairs of the offices he represented with the determination that he displayed in his own business of farming.

His loss is mourned by his family of three sons, George of Gladstone, Mich., William Henry of Portland, Ore., and David Thomas, at home; and a daughter, Mrs. H. J. (Ella) Laying of Amery. His wife preceded him in death passing away on November 13, 1938.

Funeral services will be conducted on Saturday afternoon, June 13, at three o'clock from the Griebenow Funeral parlors, with Rev. R. E. Ortmayer officiating.
