School: Hixon, Frenchtown PTA (1948)

FRENCHTOWN PTA--1948

An appreciative audience filled to overflowing our school on Sunday evening, June 6, 1948 as they came to view the exhibits and hear the program honoring Wisconsin on her 100th birthday.

The exhibit included article ranging from huge oxen yokes and a 200 year old Victorian style bathtub to spinning wheels, fine copper ware, pottery, dishes, spectacles 100 years old, a day book from 1873 in which 6 pounds of beef steak was listed at 8 cents per pound, fine handwork, old guns, baby carriages and chairs of by-gone days.

The following program was presented:

1. "On Wisconsin", by Frenchtown orchestra.

2. Indians on Black River, by John Nielsen, Klay Keskimaki and Richard Nielsen.

3. Quadrilles by pupils of Frenchtown directed by Mrs. Bruckschlager.

4. A talk by Mr. Hayward of Spencer in which he presented his fine display of miniature logging camps and everything that goes with them.

5. Lumberjack music by Hans Hansen and Pete Steager.

6. Mary Ann Gets "Took", from 1800 to 1948.

7. Songs of Carrie J. Bond by Eugene Koplitz accompanied by Mrs. Wilson.

8. I Remember Frenchtown, a few words from former teachers who were present: Mrs. Edith (Lubner) Posley, 1906-07; Mrs. Marion (Catt) Smith, 1923-24; Mrs. Olive (Warden) Miller and Miss Stella Warden, 1929-37; Mrs. Myrtice (Koplitz) Tieman, 1941-44.

9. "Wisconsin, Land of Beauty", a song by the Cizik sisters.

The closing number was a salute to our last French family, Mr. and Mrs. Thebert by women in native costume representing all of the nationalities in the district: Anna Debilt, Dutch; Margaret Rohland, Polish; Sylvia Peterson, Finnish; Frances Sorenson, Swedish; Clara Frast, Danish; Ethel Anderson, Norwegian; absent, Lithuanian; Margaret Molzen, Hungarian; Doris Buchanen; Irish; Mabel Wittemore, English; and Delia Draheim, German.

Presenting of flowers to the Theberts by Janet Rasmussen and Jimmy Peterson. Mrs. Esther Sorenson then read a poem (accompanied by Floyd Hansen) written especially for our Centennial by Clara Frost. In conclusion the audience then joined the nationality group in singing, "America the Beautiful."

There are still a few copies of the "History of Early Frenchtown" for those who may wish to have one.
