Chatten, Martha (23 May 1839 - 12 Sep 1912)

On Thursday, Sept. 12, 1912, occurred the death of Mrs. Martha Chatten, a well known and revered mother of this village (Humbird, Clark County, Wis.). Her death came suddenly as a result of heart failure. She was born in Licking Co., Ohio, May 23, 1839, and died at the age of 73 years, 3 months and 20 days.

She was married to John Chatten Oct. 12, 1865, in Richland Co., Wis. They came to this vicinity in 1882 and have lived in this village for the past 15 years, where she made many friends.

She joined the Christian Church at the age of 15 years and there held her membership until twenty-two years ago when she became a member of the Free Methodist Church. Mrs. Chatten was a devoted Christian and loved the house of God, where she was regular in attendance until enfeebled in body by failing health. There are left to mourn her death, her husband; two daughters, Mrs. George Springer and Mrs. R. G. Markham, of Augusta; one brother, Mr. William Jewell of Bloom City; eighteen grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and two nephews, McKinley Chatten and Thomas Jewell, whom she raised from childhood.

The funeral services were conducted by her pastor, Rev. E. A. Wolfe, in the Free Methodist Church Sunday, Sept. 15, at 2:30 p.m., text: "Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord." -- Rev. 14:13. Interment was in the Mentor Cemetery. The floral tributes from friends were much appreciated by the bereaved family.

The following relatives attended the funeral: Mr. and Mrs. George Springer and family, Mr. and Mrs. R. G. Markham and family, Mr. Arthur Zank, Mr. and Mrs. Earl Langworthy, of Augusta; Wm. Jewell of Bloom City; Mr. and Mrs. M. M. Phillippi of Marshfield.
