Putman, Velva I. (15 Dec 1910 - 23 Apr 1917)

Little Velva Putman died at the hospital in Eau Claire last Monday morning at about four o'clock. She had been at the hospital two weeks and four days suffering with acute Bright's disease, and her death was not unexpected.

Through the long weeks of illness, little Velva was a patient sufferer, seldom giving a murmur of the pain she was bearing. During the time at the hospital, homesickness overcame her at times and she longed for her parents and sisters and brothers. It was though during the week that she was some better, and her mother, who had been staying in Eau Claire, returned home. Sunday afternoon a telephone message came stating that she was much worse, so the parents went at once to her bedside. Velva was conscious until almost the last and passed away under the caresses of her grief-stricken parents.

Velva Irene, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Putman, was born near Humbird, Clark County, Wis., Dec. 15, 1910, and departed this life at the early age of 6 years, 4 months and 8 days, on April 23, 1917. The remains were brought home by the sorrowing parents on Monday evening, and the funeral was held at the Free Methodist Church on Wednesday afternoon, conducted by Rev. J. K. Peckham. The burial was in the family plot in the Mentor Cemetery, beside a little brother who died a number of years ago. Pallbearers were Elsie Schumacher, Alice Bell, Viola Pickett and Leona Dimmitt. Beautiful floral tributes of remembrance were sent by Alice and Mary Bell and schoolmates of the little girl in Miss Johnson's department, and Miss McNamara.
