Hardwick, James (22 Dec 1836 - 20 Sep 1918)

James Hardwick was born near Ross, Herefordshire, England, Dec. 22, 1836. When 18 years old he came to America with his mother, two brothers and a sister. They lived in New York State about eight months, then came to Lake Co., Ill., living there less than two years. In the fall of 1856 they moved to Buffalo Grove, Iowa, living there one year, moving to Barclay. In 1869 they bought a farm four miles north of Brandon, living there until 1893, then moving to Jesup. They lived there on a small farm 23 years, moving then to Humbird, Clark County, Wis., to be near his son William.

In 1867 he was united in marriage to Lovica Grattan at Independence, Iowa. Ten children were born to their union, four of whom are living: Wm. of Fairchild, Sadie Ross of Jesup, Hazel Nenenkirk of Strawberry Point, and Thomas of Camp Pike, Ark. His wife, one sister and a number of other relatives also survive him.

He died at his home near that of his son William at Humbird, Wis., Sept. 20, 1918, and aged 81 years, 8 months and 27 days. The remains were brought to Brandon and the funeral was held from the Methodist Church at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Rev. Wyrick preaching the sermon.
