Harris, Charles W. (22 JUL 1838 - 27 APR 1912)

The many friends of C.W. Harris, for thirty years a resident of the town of Hull, Marathon Co., Wis., were shocked on Sunday morning, as the news of his sudden death, which occurred on Saturday night, April 27th, spread quickly throughout the town and city. Mr. Harris had not been in the best of health the past two years, and passed through a severe illness this winter, but was reported on the gain and was a visitor in this city on Saturday previous to his death, greeting friends as was his usual custom. He was one of the leading and highly respected farmers of his town and had a kind word for all. He took a lively interest in the affairs of the town and this city, which has always been his trading point. We will all miss Wes Harris, as he was familiarly called.

C.W. Harris was born in Tuscarawa, Ohio, July 22nd, 1838; and resided in that state until thirty years ago. He enlisted as a private in Co. F. 111 Ohio Vol., and served until the close of the war, receiving his discharge July 14th, 1865. He was married to Miss Charlotte Otis at Edgerton, Ohio, on Feb. 8th, 1868. On May 17th, 1882, he arrived in Colby with his family and settled on the farm where he died. He joined Isaac N. Earl Post No. 112, G.A.R. in this city, Dec. 22nd, 1883, and was still an honorable member of the Post at the time of his death. He leaves his widow and two children, Howard, residing at home, and Ada, Mrs. Theo. Larvigne, now residing in Colby, to mourn his sudden departure from this life.

The funeral was held under the auspices of the G.A.R. from the M.E. Church in this city, Tuesday afternoon, Rev. W.E. Marsh officiating. At the grave the beautiful ritualistic service of the G.A.R. was carried out. The W.R.C. accompanied the G.A.R. in a body.
