Betlach, Arabella C. (27 MAY 1911)

Miss Arabella C. Betlach and George J. Hoppen were quietly married at seven o’clock this morning by Rev. W.J. Rice, at St. Stephen’s Church. There were no attendants. Immediately after the ceremony a wedding breakfast was served at the home of the bride’s father. Mr. and Mrs. Hoppen departed on the 10:15 train for Chicago and Milwaukee, on a two week trip. On their return they will live at 309 Strongs Av.

The bride is the youngest daughter of V. Betlach, and has lived here all her life. She graduated from the local high school in 1909. She has always been one of Stevens Point’s most popular young ladies. The groom was formerly employed in the express business, but at present occupies the position of brakeman on the Soo Line. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Hoppen of Colby, Wis.

There was a large company of friends at the depot to give the newly married couple a rousing send off, and the way in which they were defeated in accomplishing their purpose was quite amusing. Upon the arrival of the train the bride and groom were brought around the south side of the trick in J.R. Ptiffner’s auto. The train hid them from view, and not until the signal for starting was given did they board the train. The thought that the auto might have been employed to take the couple to Stockton to meet the train there, cause the merrymakers to be a little lax in their search. Two of the party took the train as far as Stockton, in hopes of finding them there, and were greatly surprised to see them already on the train when it started. (Stevens Point Journal)

Mrs. Peter Hoppen attended the marriage of her son in Stevens Point, which occurred on Saturday, May 27, 1911.
