Newell, Wilder (18 June 1858 - 24 May 1937)

Wilder Newell, for many years a resident of Neillsville, died suddenly May 24, 1937, at the home of his son, Leo, at Inglewood, Calif., where he had been employed for some time. Death was due to hear failure.

Mr. Newell was born June 18, 1858, at Cooksville, Wisconsin, coming to Neillsville in 1885 to assist Mr. Lake in building the Will Klopf, Simon Reiniking and John Servaty, Sr., homes on the North Side.

On December 8, 1886, Mr. Newell was united in marriage to Carrie B. Vernon of this city. To this union six children were born: Eva, Esther, Mrs. Leslie Marden, Neillsville; Leo Francis, Inglewood, Calif.; Clara May, Mrs. Willis Enhelder, Neillsville; Ida Mary, Mrs. LeRoy Cunningham, of Three Lakes, Wis.; Cassius John, at home; Bethel Gertrude, Mrs. Richard Bradley, of Greenwood, all whom with the widow survive. There are also 12 grandchildren.

Mr. Newell followed his trade up to the time of his death, doing the carpenter work on a pet farm operated by his son. He went to California a number of years ago to visit the son, and feeling that the California climate was beneficial to his health decided to remain in the West.
