Langreck, Marcella Lucille (16 Dec. 1918 - 4 Jan. 1939)

Mrs. Francis Langreck, about 20, of the town of Weston, mother of three children, died at 6:20 p.m. Wednesday in a Marshfield hospital as a result of scarlet fever.

It was the first death caused by that disease in Clark County since 1936, when at least two scarlet fever deaths were reported, according to County Nurse Gertrude Clouse.

Mrs. Langreck had been ill only five days. She was removed in an ambulance to the isolation ward in Marshfield late Wednesday afternoon when her condition became acute. She died shortly after her admission in the ward.

Three other members of the family are ill from the contagion. Mr. Langreck is seriously sick as a result of complications resulting from the disease. Antone John, three-year-old boy, also is seriously ill, Francis Ferdinand, 2, is said to be recovering.

The family’s two-month old baby, Eugene, has escaped thus far. However, Mrs. Raymond Schaefer, sister-in-law of Mrs. Langreck, contracted the disease while caring for the Langrecks’, Miss Clouse said.

One hundred and ninety-nine scarlet fever cases were reported in the county in 1936, the year in which the last previous deaths occurred. In 1937, 58 cased were reported, and in 1938, 46 cases were reported, Miss Clouse said. Miss Clouse requested that all cases be reported to local health officers.

Private funeral services for Mrs. Langreck were to be held this afternoon (Thursday) with the Rev. Fr. Joseph A. Biegler in charge. Burial was to be made in St. Mary’s Catholic cemetery.

Mrs. Langreck, nee Marcella Lucille Schaefer, was born, December 16, 1918, in the town of York. She was educated in the rural school of York and for three years attended Neillsville high school.

She was married to Francis Langreck on January 18, 1935, going soon after their marriage to the Martin Lastofka farm which they have since operated.

Deceased leaves besides her immediate family, her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Anton Schaefer, and two brothers, Raymond of Weston and Evarist, at home.
