Wyczawski, Mary (December 9, 1930 - August 11, 2004)

Mary (Mrs. Carl "Red") Wyczawski, age 73, of New Ulm, Minnesota, died Wednesday, August 11, 2004 at the Divine Providence Community Home in Sleepy Eye, Minnesota.

Mass of Christian Burial was 10:30 a.m., Saturday, August 14, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in New Ulm with burial in the New Ulm City Cemetery. Father Douglas Grams celebrated.

Visitation was from 4 - 8 p.m., Friday and continued for one hour prior to the time of mass on Saturday at the St. Mary’s Catholic Church in New Ulm. There was a parish prayer service at 7 pm. Friday at the church.

The Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm handled the arrangements.

Mary is survived by her husband, Carl "Red" Wyczawski of New Ulm; daughters and sons-in-law: Mary Beth and Patrick Murray of Coon Rapids, Sara and David Stenhaug of Rochester, Patty Wyczawski and Phil Martin of St. Paul, and Amy and Chris Cooke of Columbia Heights; sons: Steven Wyczawski of St. Paul; Paul Wyczawski of Murray, Kentucky; and Thomas Wyczawski of Robbinsdale; grandchildren: Trenton, Travis, Jordan and Joshua Wyczawski; Tim, Katie and Meghan Murray; Susan and Elizabeth Stenhaug; and Henry Martin and Alexandra Cooke; a sister, Carol Smith of St. Peter; and brothers and sisters-in-law, Thomas and Kaye Green and William "Bill" and Elizabeth Green, all of New Ulm.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Benedict in 1961 and Helen in 1983.

Mary Elizabeth Green was born December 9, 1930, in New Ulm, the daughter of Benedict and Helen (Schweiss) Green. She attended St. Mary’s Grade School and was a 1948 graduate of New Ulm High School. She attended Clarke College in Dubuque, Iowa from 1948 to 1949. She then attended the College of St. Catherine in St. Paul, graduating in 1952. She received her Masters degree from Mankato State University. Mary’s teaching career started at Slayton High School where she taught from 1952 to 1953, at Eau Claire Memorial High School in Eau Claire, Wisconsin from 1953 to 1954, in West Allis, Wisconsin from 1954 to 1955, at New Ulm Junior High from 1973 to 1978 and New Ulm Senior High School from 1978 until 1993. She also worked as a substitute teacher at St. Mary’s Grade School in New Ulm. Mary married Carl L. Wyczawski on June 12, 1954 at the St. Mary’s Catholic Church in New Ulm. She was an avid reader until she lost her eyesight. She loved to do needlepoint, cross-stitching and knitting and was an excellent bridge player. Mary was a great supporter of her children’s endeavors and influenced their chosen professions.

She was a member of the St. Mary’s Catholic Church in New Ulm her entire life. She taught religion classes at St. Mary’s and was a member of the Catholic Daughters of America. She was a member of the Junior Pioneers, a past president of the new Ulm Mrs. Jaycees, and a Cub Scout den mother. She was a lead instructor of the Madeline Hunter Educational Series for School District 88 and a member of the Minnesota Retired Teachers Association and the New Ulm Country Club.

In lieu of flowers, the Wyczawski family prefers memorials to the donor’s choice.
