Shiltz, Fred Sr. (2 AUG 1890 - 20 JUL 1949)

Greenwood (Clark Co., Wis.) - According to John Bergemann, Clark County deputy coroner, no inquest will be held in the death of Fred Shiltz Sr., 58, who lived about ½ mile northwest of Greenwood.

Mr. Shiltz committed suicide approximately 9 a.m. Wednesday by slashing his throat with a razor. His wife found the body about 10 a.m., 20 feet north of the chicken house, with the razor lying about 14 inches from his head.

A former resident of the Town of Hendren (Clark Co.), Shiltz had sold his home farm recently to a son, and moved with his wife to the smaller farm where he died.

Following investigation by Sheriff Ray Kutsche, Dist. Atty. Clarence Gorsegner, and the deputy coroner, the death was termed a clear case of suicide.

Mr. Shiltz had suffered a nervous breakdown two years ago and at that time had been a patient at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Marshfield, for six weeks. He also had been hospitalized at Rochester. Since that time he had been in a nervous condition.

Mr. Shiltz was born in Yugoslavia Aug. 2, 1890, and came to the United States when he was 16 years old.

On July 3, 1916, he was married at Aurora, Minn., to Mary Kozar. After their marriage they lived at Aurora for 10 years and in 1926 came to Willard, settling on a farm 2 miles southwest of Willard, no occupied by his son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Shiltz Jr.

Last fall the Shiltzes retired and moved to the former Reese farm, where they since had been residing.

Surviving besides his widow are a son, Fred Jr., Willard; two daughters, Mrs. Louis (Mary) Kebl and Mrs. Emil (Genevieve) Malnar, both of Greenwood; two brothers in Europe; and four grandchildren. Another brother preceded him in death.

The body is lying in state at the Fred Shiltz Jr. home, where funeral services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. The S.N.P.J. Lodge of Willard No. 198 will be in charge of the rites and interment will be made in the Greenwood Cemetery.
