Cummings, Charlotte F. (1 JAN 1846 - 10 AUG 1919)

Charlotte F. Fitch was born Jan. 1, 1846 in Belleville, near Ottawa, Canada, and died Aug. 10, 1919. She was fourteen years of age when she came with her mother and younger brother to a place not far from Loyal, Clark Co., Wis., where her father and another brother had located two years before. Not finding that section a desirable one in which to live, they moved to Whitehall, Wis., in 1860. Her father’s family consisted of fourteen children, she being the last one to leave for the other world.

IN 1867 she was married to Charles Cummings, a Civil War Veteran, who followed the logging business for thirty-two years, during a part of which his wife was occupied with cooking for the camps, that he was foreman of. Not many of this generation can realize the hardships of those early pioneers.

Mrs. Cummings came with her husband and one child to Greenwood (Clark Co.), about the year of 1872. Five children were born after that. The following ones are left to mourn her loss, viz: Mrs. C.D. Williamson of St. Paul, Eugene Cummings of Glendive, Mont., Charles W. Cummings of Tomahawk, Wis., Mrs. Otto Behrens, Miss Rue Cummings and Mrs. Gladys Arends of Greenwood. There are eighteen living grandchildren, three of whom served in the late war, and ten great-grandchildren.

The deceased has long been a devoted Christian, a most affectionate mother, and patient sufferer. About two years ago she was unable to attend church or prayer meeting, the two services so dearly loved. She was a power in prayer, never missing an opportunity when it came her way, and ever showed a concern for the welfare of others. She…(line missing)….society as well as leading them to a knowledge of God.

She was much interested in the temperance work, having joined the W.C.T.U. when it was first organized in Greenwood, about thirty-five years ago.

During her long confinement at home, she endured much suffering, very seldom complaining, although longing at time for the end to come, that her soul might be set free.

She leaves a host of friends, many of whom in times of trouble, have been recipients of her loving care.

The funeral services were held in the M.E. Church and her remains laid to rest in the Greenwood Cemetery.

Those from out of town who attended the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. C.D. Williamson of St. Paul, Chas. W. Cummings and son Floyd of Tomahawk, Wis., Anita Cummings of Glendive, Mont., Mr. and Mrs. Alva Cummings, Mr. and Mrs. Gus Mordene and Oscar Cummings of Whitehall, Wis.

Though from out midst this one

To another has bone,

Fond memories will remain

Until we meet again.
