Hubbard, Julia Frances (3 Dec. 1855 - 11 June 1941)

Mrs. Edward Hubbard, 85, passed away at her home in West Pine Valley Wednesday, June 11, of a heart attack.

Mrs. Hubbard was born December 3, 1855, at West Bend, Wis., to David and Fanny Evans, her given name being Julia Frances. She came to Clark County with her parents 74 years ago when she was 11 years of age. Retaining a clear mind for one of her advances years, Mrs. Hubbard could remember distinctly the trip from West Bend to Neillsville by ox team. The journey required 19 days of tedious travel. The family settled on what no is the Ernst McKimm farm. Growing up with the community, Mrs. Hubbard could relate most interestingly many of the historical events and occurrences of Neillsville and the surrounding community. She is the last member of David Evans family.

On July 4, 1877, she was married to Edward Hubbard of Pine Valley, the couple settling on the farm west of the river which was part of the large acreage at one time owned by his father, one of the early day hotel keepers. Mr. and Mrs. Hubbard were the parents of two sons, Leslie, of Janesville and Hugh, Chicago. Mr. Hubbard passed away March 13, 1934. Since the death of her husband, Mrs. Hubbard spent the winter months with her sons and their families, preferring to live among the familiar scenes in the old home during the summer. She had but recently returned to her Pine Valley home.

Devoted to her home and family, yet Mrs. Hubbard had many and varied interests in life. For year she was actively engaged in the work of the Royal Neighbors, Rebekah and Beaver Lodges and in the Woman’s Relief corps, filling many of the chairs in these organizations. She held the office of chaplain in the Royal Neighbor’s lode for about 22 years. She made and maintained a wide circle of friends, being a member of "The West Side Society", one of the first social organizations in the community west of the river. Mrs. Hubbard was a splendid citizen and a sympathetic neighbor and friend. She was faithful and joyful in everything she undertook.

Surviving are the sons, three grandchildren, and two great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at the Lowe Funeral Home at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 14, Rev. G. W. Longenecker officiating. Interment was made in the Neillsville Cemetery.

In attendances at the rites besides the sons and their wives were: Mrs. H. B. J. Andrus of Minneapolis; Mrs. John Dickinson, Merrillan; and Mrs. Esther (Bissell) Lightnizer, Augusta.

Miss Rachel Eide sang two solos, "No Night There," and "An Evening Prayer." Mrs. Jesse Scott accompanying her on the piano.

The pallbearers were; Harry Albright, Carl Kessler, Andrew Wightman, Burton Wells, Leslie Milton and George Zimmerman.
