Haas, Mary (7 March 1864 - 7 Dec. 1941)

Funeral services for Mrs. Mary Gertrude Haas were held Tuesday morning from the Schiller Funeral home and St. Mary’s Church here, Father J. A. Biegler officiating. Burial was made in the Catholic Cemetery.

Mrs. Haas death occurred at 4:05 Sunday morning at the Neillsville hospital after several weeks of illness.

She was born to Jacob and Gertrude Ardts March 7, 1864, in the township of Wilson, Sheboygan County, where she grew to young womanhood. In 1885, she was united in marriage to Lorenz Haas of the Town of Wilson, in her home county, the ceremony being performed in St. George’s church. They continued to make their home in that township for twelve years. Removing to Kaukauna, they resided there for eight years before coming to Clark County in 1906 where they purchased the old Henry Bieneck farm in Pine Valley.

Mr. Haas died August 22, 1909, leaving the widow to carry on the farm, with the assistance of the older children, when the youngest son, Joseph, was but a year old.

In 1914, Mrs. Haas old the farm and purchased property in Neillsville which remained her home until about six years ago when she was forced to give up housekeeping due to failing eyesight. Since then she had made her home among her children.

Mrs. Haas lived a beautiful Christian Life. Her pleasures throughout her lifetime were derived largely form the services she rendered in behalf of her family, her church and her neighbors and friends. For 56 years she had been a member and faithful worker in the Christian Mother’s Society.

She is survived by the following children: (Margaret) Sister M. Laurene, La Crosse; (Katherine) Mrs. J. C. Wheeler, St. Paul; Martin, Withee; Allie, Jefferson; (Nellie) Mrs. Ed. Johannsen, South Milwaukee, and Jake, (Marie) Mrs. Ernest Bieneck, Bernard and Joseph, Neillsville, Wis. She also is survived by 23 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and two sisters, Kate, Mrs. John Haas, and Sophie, Mrs. Nick Weber, both of Sheboygan.

Those who attended the rites from distant cities were: Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Wheeler and son, Howard, and wife of St. Paul; Mr. and Mrs. Allie Haas, daughter, Shirley; and son, Kenneth, Mr. and Mrs. Francis Porter and Mrs. Norbert Werner of Jefferson, Mr. and Mrs. Martin Haas and son, Glen of Withee; Mr. and Mrs. Ed. Johannsen of South Milwaukee; Sister M. Laurene and companion, Sister Claretta, of La Crosse.
