Vangsness, Albert I. (26 FEB 1854 - 15 OCT 1931)

It was with sadness that friends learned of the death of Albert Vangsness, who passed away quietly at his home here in the village (Dorchester, Clark Co., Wis.) last Thursday afternoon, Oct.. 15th, 1931, from pneumonia and complications. He had been ill for some time and although the end was expected, he slipped away so quickly that it was a great shock to all.

Funeral services were held at the home Sunday afternoon with Rev. Lester Thiel and Rev. P.F. Walter of Alma, officiating. Two beautiful songs were sung by Misses Geraldine Herman, Anita Hunt and Mildred Kronschnabl, accompanied by Miss Lydia Gutwasser during eh service. Interment was made in the Memorial Cemetery with M.M. Leslie, J.E. Allar, Louis and William Wigstadt, M.E. Vicks and Andrew Sorenson acting as pallbearers.

Albert I. Vangsness was born on Feb. 26, 1854 at Vangsnas, Norway, the family home located near Bergen. He was the son of Rev. and Mrs. O.K. Vangsness. In 1855, he came to America with his parents and settled at Soldiers Grove, Wis., where Rev. Vangsness was pastor of the Norwegian Evangelical Church. It was there in the Kickapoo valley that he grew to yourn manhood. On April 6, 1875, he was united in marriage to Mrs. Bergetta Olson of Mount Sterling at Soldiers Grove with his father officiating. They made their home in that section until the spring of 1877, when they left for the west in a prairie schooner. Upon arriving in North Dakota, they settled at Sibley, which was the farthest outpost of western civilization at that time. Mr. Vangsness was appointed postmaster there and served in that capacity for six years under the administrations of Presidents Garfield and Arthur, when he moved his family to Milnor, N.D.

In 1890 they returned to Wisconsin and settled at Thorp (Clark Co.), where he was employed by the Nye, Lusk & Hudson Lumber Co. After living there about 14 years, they moved successively to Stanley and Polley, where he was employed by the same company. In 1919 they moved to Cornell where Mr. Vangsness was employed by the Cornell Wood Products Co., until 3 ½ years ago when ill health forced him to retired and they moved to Dorchester (Clark Co.).

He leaves to mourn his loss his wife, Mrs. A. Vangsness, four sons, O.B. Vangsness, Baltimore, Md., T.B. Vangsness, Dilk, Sask., Canada, O.C. Vangsness, Sagola, Mich., and G.A. Vangsness, Villa Park, Ill., and two daughters, Miss Bertha Vangsness and Mrs. R.W. Hugoboom, both of Dorchester, Wis. He also leaves two brothers and one sister, George and Louis Vangsness and Mrs. Nella Lybeck, all of Kindred, N.D., and ten grandchildren, Gordon and Dorothy Vangsness, Villa Park Ill., Marjorie, Norbert, and Orland Vangsness, Marinette, Wis., George and Kenneth Vangsness, Baltimore, Md., and Ardath, June and Wayne Hugoboom, Dorchester, Wis.

Grandpa Vangsness was a kind, lovable man who made friends wherever he went. He was a staunch church member, a lay minister of the Methodist Conference and one who practiced Christianity in his daily living. He will not only be greatly missed by his loved ones but his host of riends shall miss his friendly council and high ideals of living. What more can be said of a man than he was at peace with his Maker and passed on to his eternal reward in Christ, his Savior.

Out of town folks present for the services were Mr. and Mrs. G.A. Vangsness, Dorothy and Gordon, Villa Park, Ill., O.C. Vangsness, Sagola, Mich., Marjorie, Norbert and Orland Vangsness, Mrs. A. Kramer and son, Norbert, Marinette, Wis., Blaine Swarthout and Miss Mary Brown, Loyal, Mrs. J.
