Calkins, Minnie (14 Aug. 1870 - 14 June 1940)

Mrs. Charles C. Calkins passed away at home in Fairchild, on Friday, June 14, at 9:30 in the evening. While Mrs. Calkins had not been in good health during the past year, her condition did not become critical until Wednesday morning preceding her death.

Minnie Davis was born in Hudson, Wis., on August 14, 1870. In the fall of 1891 she came to Fairchild to teach in the graded school. On July 17, 1894, she was married to Charles C. Calkins, of Fairchild, at the home of her parents in Boardman. With the exception of two years in Mondovi, Mr. and Mrs. Calkins made Fairchild their home, where both took an active interest and part in the community life.

Mrs. Calkins was a charter member of Fern Camp No. 1691, Royal Neighbors of America, and a member of Humbird Chapter No. 109, Order of Eastern Star. She took a great interest in the work of the Star and attended meetings of the chapter whenever it was possible.

On July 9, 1939, Mr. Calkins passed away. Notwithstanding failing health, Mrs. Calkins carried on with admirable courage. But on June 12 it became apparent that her courage and all human help were of no avail and she died very peacefully on June 14.

She is survived by four children, Grace, Seth, Claire, and Charles; two daughters-in-law, one granddaughter; a brother, W. S. Davis, of Hudson; a sister, Susie Davis, of Boardman; nieces and nephews; and a host of friends.

Funeral services were held on Sunday afternoon at the Methodist church in Fairchild, the Rev. John T. Agema officiating. Members of the Eastern Star assisted in the services. Interment was made in the Fairchild village Cemetery.
