Theiler, Frederick (27 July 1866 - 28 Dec. 1933)

Frederick Theiler was born in Spietz, Canton Berne, Switzerland, on July 27, 1866, and passed away at Humbird, Wis., on Dec. 28, 1933, at the age of 67 years, 5 months and 1 day.

His boyhood days were spent in his native country, where he received his education. When a youth of seventeen years he came to the United States, locating in Green County, Wisconsin, where he learned the trade of cheese making.

Mr. Theiler was united in marriage on Nov. 20, 1890, at New Glarus, to Miss Elise Zellar, who has been a constant and faithful helpmate, throughout the years. They remained in Green County for six years and then moved to Humbird, March 18, 1897, locating on the farm known as the Huyck place, half-mile west of the village. Their home was on the farm until 1920 when Mr. Theiler relinquished management and moved into the fine new residence which he had erected in the village.

Mr. Theiler took an interest and was an active worker in all local affairs. He was founder of the Humbird Cheese Factory and managed it and several others factories in the surrounding territory for several years. He was chairman of the town of Mentor of twenty years, and during that term served efficiently on several of the important committees of the county board. He was treasurer of the school district twelve years, and engaged in the project for the district when the final summons came. Mr. Theiler was a member of St. John’s Reformed church, serving in an official capacity for a number of years. He was a member of the local lodge of Odd Fellows.

Surviving are, his wife; five children; Mrs. Lean Tubbs of Eau Claire, Mrs. Sophie Colburn of Chicago, Mrs. Louise Eppich of Albion, Mich., Fred and Will of Humbird; three sisters, Mrs. Marie Zimmermann of Monticello, Mrs. Elise Theilkas and Mrs. Mary Ann Theilkas, and one brother, John, all of Spietz, Switzerland.

Funeral services were held at the Reformed church Sunday afternoon, and were attended by many relatives and friends, many coming from other places to be present. Rev. V. D. Weidler preached the burial sermon, and the Odd Fellows lodge performed their last rites for the dead. Interment was in Mentor Cemetery.
