Butterfield, Meta Bertha (March 22, 1916 - April 1, 2007)

Meta B. Butterfield, age 91, of Hayward, WI, passed away on Sunday April 1, 2007 at the Hayward Nursing Home.

Meta Bertha was born on March 22, 1916 in Thorp, WI, the daughter of Otto and Mary (Pingel) Beckman. She graduated from Thorp High School and married Roscoe Lee Butterfield in Thorp on November 30, 1936. The couple came to the Moose Lake area, in 1937 and entered the logging and sawmills business. Meta cooked for the workers in the logging camp and later helped with the family well drilling business. Meta raised her nine children, providing food for the table by gardening and canning. She enjoyed sewing, quilting, and making rag rugs. She was a faithful member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Hayward and many times brought her sewing machine to church to help with various projects. After her husband Roscoe died in 1975, she worked at the Co-op Restaurant in Hayward. Meta enjoyed long walks and making quilts for her children and grandchildren.

Meta is survived by her nine children: Keith Butterfield and Lois (Duane) Jacobson, both of Waukesha, WI, Janet (Don) Klemme of Sheboygan, WI, Joyce (Tom) Baurain of St. Louis, MO, Lloyd (Linda) Butterfield of Hayward, WI, Roscoe C. (Jane) Butterfield of Phoenix, AZ, Thomas (Jane Neuharth) Butterfield and Kathryn (Ralph Boelman) Bailey, both of Hayward, WI, and Forrest (Jan) Butterfield of Mattawan, MI; 24 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; three sisters: Marge Bauers, Hilda Ricci, and Lena Drinkwine; one brother, Lawrence Beckman; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; granddaughter, Anne Butterfield; daughter-in-law, Jean Butterfield; one sister, Irene Wehrmann; and one brother Arnold Beckman.

A funeral service was held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, April 4, 2007, at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Hayward with Pastor Kenneth Hinrichs officiating. A visitation was held from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday at the Anderson-Nathan-Koerpel Funeral Home in Hayward and one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment was in the Spider Lake Cemetery.
