Hart, Norman (22 March 1859 - 29 April 1935)

An esteemed citizen was lost to Humbird and vicinity when Norman Hart answered the final summons about 12:15 o’clock last Monday afternoon, after a long illness. Although he had suffered greatly at times, and the end came peacefully. Mr. Hart had been in failing health for a year or more from arterial affliction and for about six months was confined to his bed most of the time.

Funeral services were held at the M. E. Church Wednesday afternoon at 2:00 o’clock, and many friends and neighbors during his near to fifty years residence in the community assembled in the congregation for the last rites. Mr. Hart many years ago affiliated with the Free Methodist Church, and Rev. E. A. Wolfe, pastor of the Free Methodist congregation, preached an impressive burial sermon. Many beautiful floral emblems were placed about the casket and altar. Burial was in the Mentor Cemetery.

Norman Hart was born March 22, 1859, in the province of Ontario, Canada. He grew to young manhood in the vicinity of Colburn, Ontario, where on September 25, 1877; he was united in marriage to Mary G. Gaffield. In 1886, this young couple moved to a homestead east of Humbird. After several years they established their home northeast of the village on the farm now occupied by their son Harry. In 1901, Mr. Hart purchased the meat market in Humbird, which business he operated until 1913, when he retired. He resided in the village until his death, April 29, 1935, at the age of 76 years, 1 month and 7 days.

Mr. Hart is survived by his wife and six children, Charles, Ann, Harry, Jennie, Alice, and Ivis. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Mattie. In addition to the widow and children he is survived by two brothers, George, of this village, and Fred, of Mondovi, also by ten grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

Hart Farm

Norman Hart and his wife Mary with their three children Charley, Anna, and Matti emigrated from Ontario, Providence, Canada, to Humbird and homesteaded 160 acres in Section 26 of the town of Mentor in the year of 1685. Later more land was purchased, on which the buildings of the Hart farm now stand. Four more children were born after the Harts moved to Wisconsin. in 1943, their son Harry and his wife Anna bought the farm from Ms mother, then in 1957, their son Harold and his wife Muriel purchased the farm from his father, thus the Hart farm has been in the family for 84 years.
