Martens, John H. (16 Apr. 1898 - 22 Jan. 1948)

Mr. and Mrs. Emil Martens and son John and Mr. and Mrs. Ervin Burnett attended the funeral services of John Martens, age 49, at Junction City, Tuesday afternoon. He was the youngest son of the former Mr. and Mrs. John Martens Sr., who were pioneer residents of the Town of Unity and was a brother to Emil Martens and Mrs. Burnett. He died at his home in Junction City Friday and is survived by his wife and family and several brothers and sisters.

John H. Martens, 49, passed away at Martens Club, Junction City, Friday morning, January 22, of a stroke of paralysis. Funeral services were held at the Marten Funeral Home, Junction City, and at 2:00 o’clock at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. Rev. A. H. Wessel officiated at the services.

The body was taken to the Martens Morgue and will be buried in the Colby Cemetery in Spring.

Mr. John H. Martens was born at Unity on April 16, 1898, the son of Mr. and Mrs. John Martens Sr. He has been a resident of Central Wisconsin his entire lifetime, through young manhood at Unity, and since he married Miss Pearl Havitz at Junction City.

Surviving are his wife and six children, Joyce, Donald, Janice, Rita, Donna and Joan all at home; also three brothers, Emil of Unity, Daniel of Spencer, and Erdman of Marshfield. Six sisters, Mrs. Erwin (Matilda) Burnett of Unity, Mrs. Al (Ida) Hoover of Marshfield, Mrs. Joe (Lena) Lee of Seattle, Washington, Mrs. Lawrence (Sophia) Kinkaid of Portland, Oregon, Mrs. John (Margaret) Fitchett and Mrs. Harold (Susie) Neitzel of Milwaukee. One brother, Henry, his father and mother preceded him in death.

Mr. Martens came to Junction City in the year 1923, purchased a cheese factory which he operated until August 1945, when he suffered a stroke, then he sold the cheese factory and moved to Stevens Point; returning to the town of Carson where they purchased the tavern.
