Velcheck, Barbara (17 SEP 1866 - 30 JUN 1936)

Barbara Velcheck, 70, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Arthur Soderberg on June 30th, 1936. Stricken with a heart ailment, apparently in the best of spirits and her health much improved the end came suddenly.

Barbara Plecity was born at Prague, Bohemia on Sept. 17th, 1866. She married John Velcheck, immigrated to the United States and in 1888 they settled near the village of Thorp, Clark Co., Wis. Barbara Velcheck was a willing helpmate, assisting her husband to make a farm and a home. To them and many familiar like them, sturdy European stock, do we owe much of our progress, the wealth and good citizens that Clark County now boasts. Truly they went out into the wilderness and made the way clear..

Eleven children were born to this couple, all of whom are living. When death took her beloved husband from her just when things were beginning to shape themselves, Barbara Velcheck kept her family intact and bravely carried on, teaching her boys and girls thrift, honesty and the need of gainful occupation. She spent the last years of her life with her children.

She leaves to mourn, one brother, Frank Plecity of Gilman, Wis., two sisters, Mrs. Martin Dvorak of Stanley, Wis., and Mrs. Henry Klauck of Withee. Eleven children, Anthony Velcheck, Thorp, Fred Velcheck, Chicago, August Velcheck, Thorp, Frank Velcheck, Owen, Mrs. A.G. Sanders of Marshfield, Mrs. John Burke, Boyd, Mrs. Arthur Soderberg, Thorp, Mrs. J.A. Ludwig, Rudyard, Mont., Mrs. Verona Sigler, East Chicago, Ind., Mrs. Frank O’Rourke, Whiting, Ind., Mrs. A. Schweingruher, East Chicago, Ind.

The funeral was held at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church July 3, 1936, at 9:30 a.m., with interment in St. Bernard’s Cemetery, services were conducted by the Rev. A.M. Muckerheide. The pallbearers were sons and nephews of deceased, sons: August Velcheck, Frank Velcheck, nephews, Arnold Velcheck, Myron Sanders, George Burke, Arthur Soderberg, Jr.
