Hastreiter, Joseph (21 SEP 1888 - 28 OCT 1936)

Joseph Hastreiter, 48, lumberman of this village (Thorp, Clark Co., Wis.), died at a Wausau hospital last Wednesday night, Oct. 28, 1936, after a week’s illness caused by infection following an operation.

Mr. Hastreiter was born in Marshfield, on Sept. 21, 1888. He attended St. John’s Parochial school there and also spent three years at St. Lawrence College, Calvary, Wis. Three years after his marriage to Miss Barbar Baumann of Marshfield, on May 25th, 1909, the Hastreiters moved to Parker’s Prairie, Minn., where they engaged in farming until 1920, when they returned to Wisconsin. Mr. Hastreiter purchased a sawmill at Rib Falls and operated it during the succeeding years. The family lived at Athens until 1929, in Marshfield one year and then moved to Rib Falls, coming to Thorp to reside about two months ago. Mr. Hastreiter became engaged in the lumbering industry in and around Thorp in the Fall of 1934.

Immediate members of the family left to mourn his untimely passing are: his wife, seven children, Helen, Kenneth, Robert, Gordon, Bernard, Theresa and Joseph Jr., at home; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jos. Hastreiter, Marshfield; eight brothers and sisters, Louis, Anton, Frank and John Hastreiter, Marshfield; Michael Hastreiter and Mrs. Louis Blaschek, Parker’s Prairie, Minn., Mrs. Vernon Jaeger, Chicago, and Mrs. Rudolph Ortlief, Dorchester, Wis.

Funeral services were conducted by Rev. A.M. Muckerheide at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church here on Monday morning, the body being laid to rest in Hillside Cemetery, Marshfield by Rev. Schmidtz, who conducted the services there.

Pallbearers were Frank, Anton and John Hastreiter and Alfonse, Anton and Philip Baumann.
