Ewert, Carl (24 Mar. 1858 - 8 Mar. 1931)

Carl Ewert, whose death was chronicled in the Phonograph last week, was born in Grim, Germany, March 24th, 1858, and died in Unity, Wis., March 8th, 1931, at 7:40 A.M. at the age of seventy-two years, eleven months and twelve days. He was married the first time to Caroline Ziegert in Germany and came to the United States with his wife and one child in 1881. He stayed in Milwaukee a short time and then drove through the wilderness to Unity where he bought land and started a farm five miles west of the village. He became one of the leading farmers in the community. To this union were born eleven children of whom the following are still living: Mrs. Emma Finch of Raymond, S.D., Mrs. Bertha Luchterhand of Unity, Mrs. Rosa Klein of Spencer, Mrs. Elsie Carlson and Mr. Henry Ewert of Unity, Mr. Arthur Ewert of Colby. Mr. Ewert’s first wife died from an accident on October 6, 1905. He married a second time, Mrs. Ida Siegrist of Unity. To this union one son, Lester, who lives at home with his mother, was born.

Besides the above relatives, the deceased leaves three step children, Frank and William Siegrist of Unity, Wis., Mrs. Dora Ewert of Unity, twenty-three grand children, four great grand children. Also two brothers, William of Unity, Christ of Park Falls, one sister, Mrs. Hannah Wuellner of Little Falls, Minn., one half sister, Mrs. Minnie Muncy, one half brother, Henry Zimmerman of Little Falls, Minn., one step sister, Mrs. Mary Guse of Clear Lake, Minn.

The deceased lived on his farm until the fall of 1916 when he sold his farm to his son, Henry, and moved to the village of Unity where he lived until his death. He had a lingering illness for four years - pernicious anemia - from which he gradually became weaker and on Nov. 26, 1930, he was taken seriously ill and was confined to his bed from that time until his death. The large funeral testified that he was held in high esteem.

The out of town people here for the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Frank Lemke, Mr. and Mrs. Christ Ewert, Mrs. Henry Helmke, Mr. Henry Rickert, Mr. George Franke of Park Falls, Wis., Miss Alma Luchterhand of Minneapolis, Mr. and Mrs. John Petedson of Owen, Mr. C. F. Jesse and Mrs. Ed. Schmall of Antigo, Mr. and Mrs. Gust Franke and son, Junior, of Marathon City, Wis., Mrs. Hattie Ewert, Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Franke, Mr. and Mrs. Otto Gaulke, Mr. and Mrs. Ed. Kleinschmidt, Mrs. Ernest Sanger, Mrs. John Franke of Chili, Wis., Mr. Wm. Luchterhand, Mrs. Minnie Mcgee of Loyal, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Wagner and son, George, of Granton, Wis., Mr. and Mrs. O. Helmke of Marshfield, Mr. and Mrs. John Wagner, Mrs. Gust Gunther, Mrs. Herman Fielder of Chilton, Wis.
