Crothers, George Herbert (March 29, 1930 - June 1, 2007)

George Herbert Crothers, age 77, of Neillsville passed away suddenly at his home on Friday, June 1, 2007.

George was born on March 29, 1930 on the family farm near Neillsville, Wisconsin to Donald and Elizabeth (Quinnell) Crothers. He graduated from Neillsville High School and enlisted in the U. S. Navy in 1951. While stationed in Pensacola, Fla., he met his future wife, Betty Sue Shoults. They were married on Nov. 6, 1955 in her hometown of Lawley, Ala. They moved back and took over the family dairy farm by Neillsville until 1986 when the cows were sold. Following that, until retirement, George raised Hereford beef cattle, and worked for HSCS and Gaier Construction. After retiring he busied himself with gardening, making maple syrup, intensive reading, playing with his antique Rumley Oil Pull Tractor and spending time with his beloved wife, Sue and family. George loved God, his wife and six children and their families. He was never happier than when they were all together. He was a special husband, father and friend.

George was a member of the United Church of God in Eau Claire, the American Legion and the Central Wisconsin Steam Engine Club.

He is survived by his wife, Sue of 51 years and sons, Edward (Lynn) Crothers, of Neillsville; George A. (Judy) Crothers, of Neillsville; Donald (fiancé Rita) Crothers, of Neillsville; and Stephen (Karola) Crothers, of Portland, Oregon; and daughters, Melanie (Kevin) Gaddis, of Neillsville; and Carolyn Lane (friend Aslam), of Spring Lake Park, Minn. He is also survived by 16 grandchildren.

George was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Donna Silverberg.

Funeral services for George were held on Tuesday June 5, 2007 at the Gesche Funeral Home in Neillsville, Wis. Interment was in the Neillsville City Cemetery.

Serving as casket bearers were Arthur Gaddis, Kevin Gaddis, Ryan Gaddis, Dustin Gaddis, Mitchell Lane, Russell Kleinschmidt, Ronald Zank, and Aslam Massan.

The Gesche Funeral Home of Neillsville assisted George’s family with arrangements.
