Youmans, Jonas H. #2 (17 JUN 1817 - 15 OCT 1899)

J.H. Youmans died at the home of his son, C.A. Youmans, at 11 o’clock Sunday morning, death resulting from peritonitis caused by a fall.

He was born in the town of Coeymans, Albany Co., N.Y., June 17, 1817, and was therefore 82 years, 3 months and 28 days old. When one year old he moved with his parents to Genesee Co., N.Y., where on June 8, 1962, he married Adeline Sill, whom he survived 11 years. Located at Buffalo, worked at carpentering until 1845; moved to Kenosha, Wis., in 1852 located on Empire Prairie, Arlington, Columbia Co., where he engaged in farming. Continued on the farm and at Poynette until 1872, when he removed to Barron Co., removing here (Neillsville, Clark Co., Wis.) in 1882. He is survived by two sons and two daughters, H.J. Youmans of Platteville, C.A. Youmans, Ada E. Bosworth of Barron Co., and Mrs. Mattie F. Kimball, all of whom were present at his interment. He belonged to the old Puritan stock of New England and to a family noted for longevity. His father was born more than 130 years ago, and deceased was the last of a large family, surviving by 11 years his brother Vincent, who at the age of 93 years was killed by a train. The ancestors were English, and settled in the Hudson River country, where many of the family still live.

In politics he was Republican, but for a time acted with the prohibitionists. He was strong in his opinions and aggressive, firm for what struck him as right. He was deeply religious and was for over 40 years associated with orthodox churches. He avoided show or ostentation and ever sought to do his duty as he saw it, regardless of consequences.

The funeral was held at the home of C.A. Youmans, Revs. Hendren and Longenecker officiating, with music by the male quartet. The burial was in the Neillsville Cemetery.
