Ayer, Verlund (8 Sept. 1914 - 23 June 1934)

Verlund Ayre, age nineteen, son of Walter Ayre of the town of Unity, was instantly killed when struck by a heavy timber last Saturday night when a big dairy barn collapsed during the terrific wind storm. The young man was cultivating corn as the storm approached and he unhitched the horses and took them into the barn, but, he hardly entered the barn, when it crashed. His father who entered the pump house, saw the barn demolished and rushed to see how his son was but found him on the concrete floor beneath the wreckage. In his panic, he seemed to have the strength of three men and raised the heavy timbers, twelve inches thick each way, thirty feet long and sawed from hardwood logs, while the mother and other children extricated the body. The youth was carried to the house but died a few minutes later. The horses were not hurt.

Funeral services were held at the Arthur Wisnosky home at Riplinger at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday and at the Riplinger Lutheran church at 2:00 p.m., Rev. W. Gamb officiating, and internment was made in the town of Beaver cemetery.

*** Note: Verlund’s date of birth is from the Beaver Cemetery index on this site. His name is spelled as Verlund Ayre in this obituary.
