Stielow, Henry (19 Dec. 1865 - June 1936)

The body of Henry Stielow, seventy year old Spanish-American war veteran, was found in a swamp one mile north of Corinth after being missing for ten days. The body was found by Arthur Ewan while walking through the swamp.

Dr. H. A. Schulz of Edgar, Marathon county coroner, who was notified, found the body badly decomposed. He was of the opinion that the aged man had been dead about nine days. Bruises, scratches and torn clothing indicated that Mr. Stielow had struggled in the swamp in an effort to find his way to the William Krause home at Milan where he lived.

Undertaker Lulloff of Colby was called to take the body out of the swamp and prepare the same for burial. Military funeral services were conducted Friday from the Lulloff Undertaking parlors of Colby under the auspices of the Abbotsford Veterans of Foreign Wars post and internment was made in the Abbotsford cemetery.

The deceased was born in Germany, December 19, 1865, and came to America when 19 years of age. He engaged in farming for fourteen years on a farm four miles southwest of Milan and later owned a store and tavern in that village. He retired several years ago. Owing to his advanced age, he had wandered away from home several times but had always returned. Following his last disappearance, search was conducted several days by friends and residents in the vicinity of Milan, county authorities and also by searching parties from the Rib Mountain CCC camp. One of the searches is said to have passed within twenty rods of the body.
