Merlak, Frank (4 Oct. 1872 - 23 Oct. 1961)

Greenwood--Services will be held Friday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church for Frank Merlak, 89, who suffered a fatal heart attack at 1:15 p.m. Monday in St. Joseph's Hospital at Marshfield, where he had been a patient since Saturday. The Rev. Edward Hartung will officiate and burial will be made in St. Mary's cemetery.

Friends may call at the Hill Funeral Home beginning Thursday. A general rosary service will be held Thursday at 8:15 p.m.

Mr. Merlak was born Oct. 4, 1872 in Yugoslavia. He came to the United States in 1898 and worked in a wire mill in Waukegan, Ill. He was married to the former Johanna Mackovec in 1904, at which time he moved to DeKalb, Ill. In 1917 the couple settled on a farm in the Greenwood area. In 1959 he moved to the city of Greenwood.

Mr. Merlak was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and the Slavian National Benefit Society.

He is survived by his wife, four sons, John, Waukegan; Matthew, Loyal; Roy, Cedarburg, and Martin, Greenwood; six daughters, Mrs. Frank (Mathilda) Kosic and Mrs. Harry (Agnes) Bushman, Chicago; Mrs. Paukl (Mary) Gephart, Fort Wayne, Ind.; Mrs. Carl (Anna) Stirinchuk, Waukegan, Ill.; Mrs. Philip (Jennie) Nagle, Glendale, Calif., and Mrs. Arthur (Francis) Opp, Helena, Mont.; 30 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren, and a brother, Lawrence and a sister Frances, both of Yugoslavia.

He was prededed in death by a son and a brother.
