Poernter, Joseph (24 Dec. 1870 - 30 Nov. 1942)

Joseph Poertner, aged 72, Neillsville, Wisconsin, R. F. D. 2, passed away at his farm home at 7:55 a.m., Nov. 30, 1942, at the family farm home after a year’s illness.

Funeral services have been arranged for Thursday, Dec. 3, at two p.m., the rites to be held at the Schiller- Terhune Funeral Home. The Rev. G. W. Longenecker will conduct the services. The body will be interred in the Neillsville Cemetery.

The departed was born at Hessen, Germany, Dec. 24, 1870, to Geroge and Susana Poertner. He came to this country in 1889, having been a resident of Clark County for the past 25 years.

He was united in marriage to Anna Schmidt, May 13, 1892, in Alton, Ill.

Surviving are the wife and five children, namely: Oscar Poertner and Russell Poertner of St. Louis; Louis Poertner at home; Mrs. Albert Sollberger and Mrs. Ruby Junkel, Neillsville, Wis. He also leaves two sisters, and two brothers in Germany and a sister, Mrs. Susie Heck, St. Louis.

Mr. and Mrs. Poertner came to Clark County 25 years ago; he settling on the land which had since been his home. During his first year on this land he lived in a tent, clearing land and preparing living conditions for this family. He is one of the few settlers in that section of the country who have made good inspirit of great difficulties. He and his family built up a fine garden spot in the wilderness where they have been successful fruit growers. They specialized in grapes, their fine vineyard being pride of the family and of the community, in spite of the fact that they were told over and over that this could not be done in this part of the country.

The death of Mr. Poertner ends a life of hard work, loyalty and kindness.
