Winn, Webster Monroe (26 Aug. 1857 - 22 Jan. 1943)

Webster Monroe Winn was born on a farm near Sheboygan, Wis., August 26, 1857, the son of Simeon J. and Adalade (Mallory) Winn. When Webster was two years old, his parents went back to their native home in Canada, staying there for several years. They returned to Sheboygan County and in 18786 they bought eight acres of wild land in York Township, Clark County. Mr. Winn was then nineteen years of ago and after working for several years, he too, bought wild land near his father’s farm. After building a house, he was married to Kate L. Isham, a native of La Crosse County, who was teaching the first school in district three of that township.

To this union five children were born: Bertha, now Mrs. Paul Finner, Tallahassee, Fla.; Clifford, who died August 6th, 1935; Floyd, Granton; Byrl, Wisconsin Rapids, and Ruby, Chicago. He is survived by his four children, thirteen grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

The Winn family was among the pioneers of Clark County, building up a nice farm from a wilderness. They were active in civic and church life. Mr. Winn was a charter member of the Modern Woodman lodge which soon furnished much of the early day social life of the community.

In 1910 when the children were grown, Mr. and Mrs. Winn retired from farm life and lived in Granton. He was the first supervisor when that village was incorporated and was active in Red Cross and other charitable work.

Mrs. Winn died in January, 1921. Their daughter, Ruby, came to live with her father until he came to Neillsville after marrying Mrs. Bertha Tragsdorf. After her death, seventeen years later, he made his home with his daughter in Florida, with his son, Byrl, and at the Masonic home at Dowsman where he passed away January 22nd, attended by his daughter, Ruby. He was 85 years and five months of age.

Funeral services were held in the community church of Granton on Saturday, a delegation of Neillsville and Granton Masons taking part, with the Rev. G. W. Longenecker in charge of the service. Mrs. Van Keyser and Mrs. William Schmidtke were the singers.

The pallbearers were Elmer Anderson, Roy Mortimer, Jesse Mortimer, Merton Davis, Harold Rose and Frederick Pietenpol. Those who attended the rites from distant places were; Mr. and Mrs. Byrl Winn, Wisconsin Rapids, Mrs. Ruby Marsh, Chicago, and a number from Neillsville, Wis.
