Chariton, William Lyle (1943 - 27 Aug. 1947)

Spencer, Wis. - Four-year-old William Lyle Chariton, son of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Chariton, St. Paul, Minn., was instantly killed about 7 o’clock Wednesday night, Aug. 27, when he was struck by an unidentified truck and driver at the Orville Nall filling station at Spencer, while his mother witnessed the tragedy.

The boy suffered a broken neck and a crushed face. According to Coroner John W. Hildensperger and Marathon county traffic officers who investigated the accident, the driver did not stop after striking the child and apparently was unaware that his vehicle had struck the boy.

The Charitons were on their way from Marshfield to Abbotsford, to the home of Mr. Chariton’s mother, where they have been staying the past several weeks while they sought to purchase a farm in this area. They stopped at the Nall filling station to repair a tire.

While Chariton was engaged in removing the tire the boy asked if he could leave the car to watch a train. Permission was given by the mother and it was at this point that the truck, which had taken on gasoline, pulled away from the station striking the boy as the mother looked on. It was indicated that no inquest will be held.

Besides his parents, the boy is survived by a sister, Sharon Rae.

The body was taken to the Lulloff Funeral Home at Colby where funeral services were conducted Saturday morning, Rev. Francis Brockman, pastor of St. Bernard’s Catholic church at Abbotsford, officiating and internment was made at Loyal.
