Stanek, George (1899? - 1 NOV 1941)

George Stanek, formerly of Bellinger, Wis., was killed Saturday, Nov. 1, 1941 about 10:30 p.m., while on duty as fireman on the Northwestern Railroad. He was on the Challenger enroute to California when he put his head of the engine window to see if the water intake was O.K., when the signal arm struck him in back of the head. Death was instantaneous.

The accident occurred when Mr. Stanek was on duty on 10 minutes. The engineer called to ask why the cabin was full of smoke. He called again, when getting no response turned around to see what was wrong. Mr. Stanek was slumped in the seat by the window. The engineer coasted the train to the next stop, which was a mile further and the dispatcher came to find out why the train was stopping and the engineer told him "My fireman is gone." A doctor was called but nother could be done.

Mr. Stanek was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Jos. Stanek and was raised to manhood in Bellinger later going to Chicago. He has been employed on the railroad ever since. The deceased was 42 years of age and leaves to mourn, his aged father and mother; six sisters, Mrs. John Landowski, Chicago, Ill.; Mrs. John Veeseh, Ladysmith, Mrs. S.F. Gospodor, Stanley; Mrs. Ben Rozek, Minneapolis; Mrs. Virginia Doolan, Fond du Lac; Mrs. Sophie Thompson, Ladysmith; 2 brothers, Adam Stanek, Waukesha, Chas. Stanek, Minneapolis, Minn., and a host of friends and relatives. One brother and a sister preceded him in death.

He was a member of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen and Engineers No. 237, from which organization many flowers were sent.

Pallbearers were nephews of the deceased. Services were in Chicago, Wednesday, Nov. 5, and burial was from McElReavy with Father Riesemny officiating. Interment was made at Riverside Cemetery.
