Christenson, Sam F. (3 OCT 1870 - 14 DEC 1941)

Sam F. Christenson of Eau Claire, in earlier days secretary and manager of the former Garrison Mercantile Co. and a resident of Thorp (Clark Co., Wis.) from 1884 to 1919, passed away at St. Joseph’s Hospital at Chippewa Falls on Sunday, Dec. 14, 1941, having reached the age of 71 years.

Mr. Christenson, well known to the people of this community and an active leader in civic affairs previous to 1919, was born in Ogdensburg, Wis., on Oct. 3, 1870. He left home at the age of sixteen years and upon coming to Thorp was employed by the Nye, Lusk & Hudson Co., a flourishing lumber manufacturing concern with a general store. He later entered the employ of the Garrison Mercantile Co., as clerk, and when they built the new large store in 1898 was made secretary and manager which position he held until it was sold to the present owner in 1919. During the succeeding seven years Sam devoted his entire time to his business of insurance salesman, moving to Eau Claire but returning to Thorp for two years from 1923 - 1925. From 1926 to 1931 he operated a general store at Gilett, Wis., and the last ten years of his life were spent in Eau Claire.

On March 19, 1898, he was united in marriage to Miss Amelia Banderob of Thorp. Four children were born to this union, one of whom, Thelma, died in infancy. Surviving are his widow; two daughters, Mrs. Phil Landon of Lake Wissota, Chippewa Falls, and Mrs. Ben T. Larson, 334 W. Grand, Chippewa Falls; one son, Oscar B. Christenson, Principal of Public Schools of Bloomer, Wis.; two sisters, Mrs. Mary Tarbox of Waupaca and Mrs. Walter Jensen of Ogdensburg and one brother, Edward Christenson of Waupaca.

Masonic Funeral Services were held at the Bogumill Funeral Home and at the grave by the Thorp Lodge, with O.E. Bahlke, W.M., of Eau Claire Lodge No. 112 in charge. Prayer and sermon preceding the Masonic rites was given by Rev. Larson of Chippewa Falls.

Members of the Thorp Lodge No. 264 acting as pallbearers were John LaGasse, Richard Coates, Walter E. Boelter, Wm. J. Klouda, A.J. Haasman and Wm. S. Wagner.
