Thiel, Herman Sr. (3 FEB 1855 - 9 DEC 1942)

Herman Thiel, Sr., a resident of this community (Thorp, Clark Co., Wis.) for 62 years, passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Selma Offord, in the Town of Reseburg, on Wednesday, Dec. 9, 1942. He had reached the age of 87 years, 1 month and 25 days.

Herman Thiel was born in Province Pommern, Germany, on Feb. 3rd, 1855. On Feb. 29, 1880, he was united in marriage to Albertine Roesler, who preceded him in death, Aug. 2, 1938.

He came to Thorp in 1880 and settled on his farm of 120 acres, where he had resided until 1921. Since then, he has always made his home with his daughter, Selma Offord of Reseburg.

Quiet of disposition, he was cheerful to the last; a faithful friend and neighbor, his record will be a lasting memory. Though he has departed, he is only asleep, resting after a long and well spent life, he believed in the father hood of God and the brotherhood of man. He believed that the man who scatters flowers in the pathway of his fellowmen, who lets into the dark places of life the sunshine of human sympathy and human kindness, is following in the footsteps of his Master.

Surviving relatives are five daughters, Mrs. Ida Vetterkind of Thorp, Mrs. Agnes Gorsegner of Milwaukee, Mrs. Louisa Stettler of Gotham, Mrs. Amanda Buck of Viola, Mrs. Selma Offord of Withee, and two sons, Charles Thiel of Arkansaw and Herman of Thorp; two sisters, Mrs. Tene Reseburg of Los Angeles, Calif., Mrs. Minnie Johnson of Kiel, and one brother, Wm. Thiel of Kiel.

The funeral services were held at 1:30 o’clock at the house and 2 o’clock at the Congregational Church, Rev. Hotchkiss officiating. Interment was made in the Riverside Cemetery. Pallbearers were Percy Marshall, Arthur Bobb, Joe Melbinger, Reinhold Daniels, Richard Coates and Henry Coates.
