GRASONVILLE, Md. -- Elaine Johnson Wheatley passed away Friday, Feb. 15, 2008, at her home surrounded by her loving family. She was 78 years old.

Born Aug. 29, 1929, in Unity (located between Marshfield and Abbotsford) Elaine was the daughter of Salem and Edith Johnson (who were dairy farmers in central Wisconsin). She graduated in 1947 from Colby High School in Colby and received a degree from the University of Chicago. She became a leading professional fashion model in Chicago. Subsequently she became a stewardess for United Airlines in 1951 and was based in Salt Lake City, New York and Washington D.C., served all over the United States and received numerous "Orchid Letters" from United and its passengers for her outstanding service.

She was married May 23, 1959, to Charles Fellows Wheatley Jr. of Washington, D.C. They made their home in northern Virginia and Potomac Falls, Md., and in 1983 moved to Prospect Bay in Grasonville, Md.

Mrs. Wheatley served as a fashion teacher in Washington D.C. and also received a degree as an architect in interior design from Mt. Vernon College in 1980, where she was awarded the National Deans list. She completely remodeled their antique home on the Chesapeake Bay and founded an eloquent bed and breakfast called Lands End Manor on the Bay which was nationally recognized.

Mrs. Wheatley is survived by her husband Charles Fellows Wheatley Jr.; two sons, Charles "Chip" Fellows Wheatley III of Lake Forest, Calif., and Mark Johnson Wheatley and his wife Brenda of Grasonville, Md.; a brother, Harley Johnson of Colby; and grandchild, Charles "C.J." Fellows Wheatley IV of Lake Forest, Calif.
