Mauel, Catherine Petronella (21 June 1907 - 7 February 2008)

Catherine P. Mauel, age 100, of Thorp, passed away at the Clark County Health Care Center, in Owen, on Thursday, February 7, 2008.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, February 11, 2008, at St. Bernard-St. Hedwig Catholic Church in Thorp, with Fr. Keith Apfelbeck officiating. Burial followed in St. Bernard’s Catholic Cemetery. Pallbearers were Mark Galles, Herb Hermsen, Bob Gulcynski, Rich Rosemeyer, Marvin Verkuilen and Jim Mauel. Visitation was held at the church on Monday, from 9:30 a.m. until time of service, with a 9:30 a.m. Rosary Service.

Catherine Petronella Drace was born on June 21, 1907 in Stanley, WI to Peter and Mary (Steigen) Drace. She was raised and received her education in Stanley, graduating from Stanley High School in 1925. Catherine attended Normal School for one year and received her teaching certificate. She then taught elementary school for three years in country schools. She was united in marriage to Adolph Mauel on October 1, 1929, at the Basilica in St. Paul, MN. They lived in Owen, WI until 1935, when they purchased the Bellinger Dairy Cheese Factory, which they operated until 1942. They then moved to Minnesota, where Adolph was employed as a cheese plant manager until retiring in 1966, and returning to Thorp. She resided in Thorp until entering the Clark County Health Care Center in October of 2003.

She was a member of St. Bernard-St. Hedwig Catholic Church and the Parish Council of Catholic Women.

She is survived by three children: Allen Mauel of Thorp, Collette Allen of Dearborn Heights, MI, and Mary (Gerald) Galles of Blaine, MN; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Adolph, on February 25, 1989; three brothers: Benjamin, Harry and Raymond Drace; and one sister, Gertrude Jankowski.

Thorp Funeral Home assisted the family with arrangements.
