Kanter, Nick (26 Nov. 1871 - 7 Feb. 1951)

Funeral services for Nick Kanter, age 79, whose death was chronicled in the Phonograph last week, were held Saturday morning at St. Mary’s Catholic church, Rev. N. B. Beschta officiating and internment was made in the Colby (Colby, Clark Co. Wis.) Cemetery. Pall bearers were Otto Baumgart, William Meyer, Alvin Brehm, C. J. Kraus, I. M. Firnstahl and Matt Allar.

Mr. Kanter was born at Hilbert, November 26, 1871, and, when he was six years of age, he moved with his parents to the town of Hull which was still a wildnerness at that time. When he was 18 years old, he went to Marshfield where he lived for eight years and where he was married to Elizabeth Miesen in St. John’s Catholic church. Mr. and Mrs. Kanter later returned to Colby and purchased the Kanter family homestead where they lived for 15 years when he sold this farm and bought 80 acres of wild land which he cleared. Today, it is known as the Pine Grove Farm. In the spring of 1939, Mr. and Mrs. Kanter retired and moved to the city of Colby, Wis.

Mr. Kanter held the office of school treasurer for 15 successive years, resigning when he moved away from the district; he was a charter member of the Hull Town Mutual Insurance Company and was elected a director of the organization until he was chosen president of the company. He resigned that position when he retired from farming. He held the office of supervisor for two years and was a member of the Marathon county board for six years.

Surviving are nine children - Herbert and Mrs. Harold (Rosalie) Baumgart of Unity, Clement of San Bernadino, Calif., Mrs. Edward (Alta) Kohlbeck of Grand Rapids, Mich., Mrs. Peter (Adilia) Hasenohrl of Colby, Mrs. Edward (Marina) Cleary of Watervliet, Mich., Mrs. Robert (Marcella) Carberry of Lodi, Mrs. Joseph (Oliva) Zinthefer of Marshfield and Mrs. Harry (Lucine) Benjamin of Monterey Park, Calif. Also 29 grand children and two great grand children.

His wife, a son, Rueben, two sisters and four brothers preceded him in death.

Out of town people here for the funeral were Miss Lena Kanter of Mosinee, Mr. and Mrs. Art Schultz of Wausau, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Zinthefer and daughter, Mrs. John Rembs, Mrs. Teresa Strauss, Mrs. Walter Voelker, Mrs. Leona Mittlestaedt, Mr. and Mrs. George Reichert, Pete Baer, Mr. and Mrs. Orvil Chase, Mrs. Theo, Biechler, Mrs. Art Weester, Mrs. Albert Hoff, all of Marshfield, Mrs. Emelia Finnegan of Chicago, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Carberry of Lodi, Mrs. Ed Cleary of Watervliet, Mich., Mrs. Ed Kohlbeck of Grand Rapids, Mich., Mr. and Mrs. Don Kanter of Milwaukee, Henry Meisen of Fond du Lac, Mrs. G. Bugar and son of Loyal, Mrs. Kate Pope and Mr. and Mrs. Garhart Scheel of Loyal, Miss Helen Dickoff and Mr. and Mrs. D. N. Gatling of Marshfield, Rudy Zinthefer and daughter of Marshfield.
