Mathews, Allen (15 JUN 1913 - 5 APR 1943)

Sgt. Allen Mathews of Eau Claire, son of Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Mathews of the town of Taft, was wounded in action in North Africa on April 5, 1943, and died the same day.

Staff Sergeant Allen W. Mathews was born on June 15, 1913 at Armstrong, Iowa, and came to Wisconsin with his parents at the age of three years. He grew to manhood on the farm of his parents in southwestern Taylor County. In 1935 he served in the CCC camp at Three Lakes, Wis., being honorably discharge in 1936. He moved to Eau Claire, where he was employed until enlistment in the army on Oct. 1940 in Fort Bragg, N.C., in training until the fall of 1942. He was sent overseas with the first convoy to Africa and was fatally wounded on April 5, 1943.

Sgt. Mathews is survived by his wife, Maude, and one son, of Eau Claire, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Mathews of Thorp (Clark Co., Wis.), three brothers, Charles, Myron and Dan of Eau Claire, and three sisters, (Luella) Mrs. Leo Mikels, (Irene) Mrs. Irving Drager of Mosinee, and (Grace) Mrs. Orrie Strand of Eau Claire.
