Marten, Emil W. (9 Oct. 1884 - 7 Nov. 1952)

Emil W. Marten, 68, well-known in this vicinity and in Riplinger, passed away suddenly Friday morning, November 7th at his home in Spencer of a heart attack.

Emil had been downtown that morning and then not feeling well had gone to his home where he passed away at about 10 A.M.

A native of Marathon County, Mr. Marten was widely known in this area and also throughout the state. Beside his long and faithful service as president of the Village of Spencer, he was a long-time treasurer of the school board in Spencer; president for 20 years of the Central Wisconsin Cheesemakers’ and Buttermakers Association; president of Trinity Lutheran Church Board; a stockholder in the Spencer State Bank; a member and past-president of the Spencer Lions Club of which he was a charter member; a former member of the Marathon County School Committee and a former member of the Spencer fire department.

Emil William Marten was born in the Town of Brighton on October 9, 1884 and attended public school in that community in that community and the Lutheran parochial school.

At the age of 18 he became an apprentice cheesemaker in a factory in the Town of Unity, where he was employed two summers.

During two winters, when this factory was closed, he supplemented his education with courses in a Stevens Point Business College and a dairy school at the University of Wisconsin where he majored in cheese and butter making.

After graduation from this school he became a cheesemaker at Vesper and later he served as a buttermaker in Marshfield and Palmyra.

In July, 1900, he purchased the Cheese Factory of his brother, H. A. Marten, Town of Unity and operated that plant until 1925.

For eight years he owned the Cheesemakers Manufacturing Co. of Riplinger and for a similar period was a salesman for cheesemaking equipment.

In former years he was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church and served as the congregation’s treasurer.

His marriage to the former Miss Mathilda Justman took place in St. John’s Lutheran Church October 28, 1908 with the late Rev. Thom officiating.

Funeral services were held at 2 P.M. Monday in Trinity Lutheran Church with the Rev. Randolph Mueller officiating. Burial was made in the West Spencer cemetery.

The body reposed at the Swarthout Funeral Home until 12:30 P.M. Monday when it was taken to the home. At 12:30 Monday it was taken to the church.

Active pallbearers were A. L. Boock, Lowell McIlhattan, Frank Oelrich, Walter Facklam, Maurice Anderson and Delos Kobs.

Honorary pallbearers, members of the Cheesemakers Association, were John Wuethrich, Albert Braseman, Lloyd Dickerell, Harold Klessig, Roman Brill and Martin Parson.

In charge of the many and beautiful floral remembrances were Mrs. Charles Haslow, Mrs. H. A. Kuethe, Mrs. Fred Gumz, Mrs. Vera Neubauer, Mrs. Walter Stoker, Mrs. Otto Sommers and Mrs. Martin Parson.

Surviving are his wife, a son, Elroy, Berlin; one granddaughter, a brother, Frank, Freemont; and four sisters, Mrs. Anna Kneer, North Hollywood, Calif.; Mrs. Tillie Manthe, Spencer; Mrs. Ida Justman, Lansing, Mich.; and Mrs. Walter Bruesewitz, Spencer.

Out of town relatives here for the funeral included Mr. and Mrs. Frank Marten, Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Marten, Freemont; Mrs. Charles Justman, Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Beversdorf and Jane, Birnamwood; Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Ruch, of Lansing, Mich.; Mr. and Mrs. E. V. Larson, Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Shirmer, Minneapolis; Mrs. Art Steele, Abbotsford; Mr. and Mrs. Ray Kobs, Curtiss; Mr. and Mrs. V. T. Anderson, Rochester, Minn.; Mr. and Mrs. Paul Frederich, Athens; Mr. and Mrs. W. F. Schwantes, Mr. and Mrs. L. Justman, Colby; Mr. and Mrs. M. L. Yahr, Mr. and Mrs. Al Justman, Unity; Mrs. R. Rex, Colby; Mr. and Mrs. Walter Schwantes, Granton; Mr. and Mrs. H. R. Hermanson, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Justman, Mr. and Mrs. Warren Justman of Spencer.
