John Albertus Vandeberg (4 Feb 1858, Milwaukee, Wis. - 29 Apr 1929, York Twp., Clark Co., Wis.)

Russel Vandeberg Farm

John Albertus VandeBerg, the first child of Christian and Johannah (Beyers) VandeBerg, was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in Feburary, of 1858. His parents came from Holland, their native land, to America in a 9-week ocean voyage. From Milwaukee, the family moved to Fond du Lac county where John and their other children grew up.
John worked on farms and in the woods. In May of 1882, he came to Clark County and purchased 60 acres of timber land. That same year, he married Lillian Lawrence, who was born in Sheboygan County, Wisconsin. Their first house was of logs. They they build a 14' x 16' house. They cleared the land, built a barn and other buildings and also enlarged the house. They lived there until 1922 when they rented the farm to their son, Alvin, and moved to Neillsville.

In 1939, Alvin sold the farm. It changed owners until in 1948, grandson Russel VandeBerg purchased and still owns the 60 acre home farm, besides some adjoining lands. The other parcels of land in this area, now owned by Russel, are part of a tract of land that was purchased from the Fox River Valley Company by Jessie McIntire Lawrence and his wife, Almeda (Benedict) Lawrence, great, great grand parents of Russel. Jessie and Almeda came early to this area, purchased land and later divided it mostly in 60-acre plots among relatives and three of their children, Harass A. Lawrence. Sarah A. (Lawrence) Lindsley, and Jenne Almeda (Lawrence) Rowe.
