David Freeman Britton, 96, Owen’s (Clark Co., Wis.) oldest citizen, passed away at the Odd Fellows Home at Green Bay, Friday, where he had been staying the past 10 months. His body was brought here Saturday morning and lay in state at the Griebenow Funeral Home (Owen, Wisconsin), until Monday morning, when it was taken to Sparta for burial.

For the past fourteen years he has made his home with his daughter, Mrs. Fay McCray and was well known in the city. An obituary will be published next week.

David Freeman Britton was born Dec. 31, 1848 in Jefferson Co., Wis., and passed away at the Odd Fellows Home in Green Bay, Aug. 10, 1945, having reached the age of 96 years, 8 months and 21 days. He entered the home last October, having been an Odd Fellow for 62 years, and was one of the founders of the home.

He had been in failing health the past year.

Mr. Britton was a pioneer of Owen, having assisted in building the sawmill here and was the builder of many of the first buildings in Owen. He followed the trade of millwright and was a skilled workman.

For 14 years he made his home with his daughter, Mrs. F. McCray (Delia), who gave him time, devotion and love. He was a member of the Methodist Church and was a man of good habits and wonderful memory, retaining his mental and physical faculties to the last.

Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon, Aug. 14 at 2:30 at Lanham’s Mortuary, Sparta, with Rev. Ernest Clark officiating. Burial was made in Woodlawn Cemetery of that city.

Surviving are two daughters and one son, 15 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren
