Hommel, Charlotte J. #2 (25 DEC 1854 - 28 JUN 1903)

The end came to Mrs. J. W. Hommel Sunday, June 28, 1903, at 10:15 p.m., as it must come to us all, with rest and peace, in her case, to a weary invalid, after years of patient suffering. She passed away surrounded by her loved ones, at the home on Grand Avenue.

Charlotte Jane Steele, daughter of Thos Steele and the late Mrs. Steele, was born Dec. 25, 1854, at Plymouth, Wis., and was 48 years, 6 months of age. She came with her parents to Greenwood (Clark Co., Wis.) soon after the civil war, and was married to Mr. Hommel May 19, 1872, in this city, Rev. Bushnell performing the ceremony. She was the oldest of eleven children, seven of whom survive.

The funeral was held at the home yesterday, at 3:00, Rev. G. W. Longenecker officiating. A very large and representative body of citizens attended, and the officers and men of Co. A, especially grieved at the loss of a friends who for years had taken a deep personal interest in the welfare of the militia company of which her husband had for many years been captain.

The masses of flowers brought by friends were a beautiful expression of the universal esteem in which she was held. An express wagon was necessary to convey them to the grave.

Mrs. Hommel was always the center of a large circle of friends, was the soul of the home, a capable woman, always sympathetic and helpful, and idolized by the husband and daughters, Nina and Dude, whose affectionate devotion to her care has been all that it could be. The good wife and mother and friends is at rest.
