Varney, George (1861? - 15 JUL 1903)

Last Wednesday, July 15, 1903, George Varney of Dewhurst township (Clark Co., Wis.) stepped out of his house into the front yard and with a 22 caliber rifle shot himself in the head, the ball entering the base of the brain below the right ear. He fell to the ground, and struggled some time in the death agony, finally dying.

Mr. Varney was about 42 years old with a wife and seven or eight children. Two years ago he was sent to the insane asylum, returning as cured that year, and since then has said that rather than go to an asylum again he would shoot himself. Two or three weeks ago he began to show some symptoms of the malady, and his mother died about two or three weeks ago, adding to his mental distress no doubt. A corner’s jury found that death resulted substantially as stated above.

When a small boy he received an injury to his spine, which caused one of his legs to stop growing and caused pain occasionally since.

The man had succeeded in getting a small farm cleared, and made as good a fight for a home and competence as he could. He was buried Saturday (Town of Levis Cemetery).
