My maiden name is Bischoff, and my paternal grandfather's name was Herman Bischoff, who died of kidney failure when my father was only fourteen months old. He died, I believe, in the year 1941, since my father, Thomas Bischoff (still living, though he does go to dialysis three days a week in Oregon, where he lives with my mother; my siblings also live in Oregon with their own families) was born in December of 1939. I married in May of 2001 and moved shortly afterward to Minnesota, where my husband grew up. My father and his mother and brother moved to Oregon sometime after his father died. His mother, Gladys, remarried and took the name Holweger. His older brother (by two years) died in 1995 from complications from kidney surgery. He was having his kidneys removed and, though surgery went well, his blood pressure went through the floor shortly afterward, and the doctors were unable to revive him. My father had already started dialysis at this time. I and one of my brothers also have PKD, but so far our kidneys are functioning fine (I'm told their function should remain so probably until we reach our late forties or fifties). Anyway, I'm searching for more information on my grandparents, and when I found the article you'd posted, I thought I'd at least look into it to see if this is the same Herman Bischoff. I should add that my grandpa was blinded by scarlet fever as a boy. His own father, Herman J. Bischoff, died in a horse accident, and his mother later remarried and took the name Fuller. I don't know if any of this sounds familiar. If not, you needn't waste your time answering me. I know this was posted in 2007, so if you don't reply, I'll suppose you either never received my message or you found nothing in it remotely familiar. In any case, I hope you find what you're looking for. Best regards, Sarah E. Lentz
