Becken, Martha (16 MAR 1860 - 11 MAY 1947)

At two o’clock Wednesday afternoon, May 14, funeral services for Mrs. Martha Gilbertson Becken were conducted from the Griebenow Funeral Home (Owen, Wisconsin) at Owen (Clark Co., Wis.). Rev. G. E. Borreson, pastor of the Curtiss Evangelical Lutheran Church, officiated at the final rites. Interment was made in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers at the services were: Morris Miolund, Ed Peterson, Cornel Erickson, Art Thompson, Joe Hiebsch and Frank Hiebsch. Flower girls were Mesdames Robert Nissen, Charles Peterson, Ed Peterson, Art Thompson, Theo. Thompson and Clara Peterson.

Mrs. Marth Gilbertson Becken passed away at her farm home in the Town of Hoard (Clark Co.) on Sunday afternoon at 2:30 on May 11, 1947, after a week’s illness.

She was born in O’stre Gausdal Gulbransdalen, Norway, on March 16, 1860, and came to this country in the spring of 1885, settling at Curtiss, where she was married the same year to Peter Becken. At that time this community was all woods, and only a path for a highway. They bought a wild tract of land, which they cleared and on which they farmed until 1924, when they retired from farming and bought a little home next to their farm home at Midway.

Her husband and a son George, preceded her in death in 1937, and a son in infancy, Four brothers, Hans in Norway, Christian Matthias and Ole Gilbertson of Curtiss, and also two grandchildren, preceded her in death. Surviving are four children, Gustav, Anna (Mrs. Ernest Mowery) of Hoard, Halvor of Green Grove, and Thorval of Spring Valley, and a brother, Anton, in Nowary, and 10 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
