McVean, Eugene S. (6 MAY 1874 - 10 DEC 1943)

Eugene Silas McVean of Spencer passed away at St. Joseph’s hospital in Marshfield Friday, Dec. 10, at the age of 69 years, seven months and four days.

Mr. McVean was seriously burned when he had a heart attack while fighting a grass fire on his collage property five miles west of Spencer on Saturday, Dec. 4. As soon as he regained consciousness he stepped into his car and drove half a mile to the nearest neighbor. He was then rushed to the hospital, where he passed away the following Friday.

Eugene, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Peter McVean, was born in the town of Sherman on May 6, 1874, and grew to manhood on the old homestead. In 1898 he enlisted in the U.S. army and fought in the Spanish-American war. At the close of the war he returned to the farm, and on Oct. 24, 1900, he was married to Miss Henrietta Smith.

He is survived by his wife; a son, Richard Norman, on the farm; a daughter, Mrs. Melvin (Marian) Schneider, of Hales Corners; three grandchildren; a brother, Elmer, of Birchwood, and three sisters, Mrs. Marion Facklam and Misses Harriet and Annie McVean of Spencer. A brother, Edmund, preceded him in death in 1922, and a sister, Mrs. Carrie Slocum passes away on Oct 23, 1943.

Funeral services were conducted on Sunday morning at 8 a.m. at the Swarthout funeral home in Spencer, the Rev. Ellery J. Beal officiating. Burial took place in the cemetery at Omro. Pallbearers were veterans of the Spanish-American war.
