Hayry, Mark L. (17 SEP 1974 - 12 SEP 2013)

Major Mark L. Hayry, 38, Elgin, Okla., formerly of Spencer, died unexpectedly on Thursday, Sept. 12, 2013, following a motorcycle accident. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., on Friday, Sept. 20, at the United Methodist Church in Spencer. Rev. Daniel Kim will officiate. Visitation will be held from 4-8 p.m., on Thursday, Sept. 19, at the Hansen-Schilling Funeral Home, 201 S. LaSalle St., Spencer, and again from 10 a.m. until
the time of service on Friday at the church. A memorial service will also be held 1 p.m., on Monday, Sept. 23, at the Frontier Chapel, 4121 Thomas St., Fort Sill, Okla.

Mark Hayry was born on Sept. 17, 1974, in LaGrange, Ill., the son of Bruce and Pamela (nee Engle) Hayry. He graduated from Spencer High School in 1993 and went on to earn his bachelors of science degree in electrical engineering and completed his ROTC training from Marquette University. Mark went on to earn his masters in military science and MBA from Fort Leavenworth, Kan. On July 5, 2002, Mark married Acie Johnson. Major Hayry was an officer in the United States Army and was most recently stationed at Fort Sill, Okla., as a member of the 3-13 FA. He served two combat tours in Iraq and returned home from duty from Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, on Sept. 3, 2013. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing, boating and riding his motorcycle. He took special pride in his children and loved coaching their soccer team and leading them in scouting. Those who knew him best will miss his warm spirit coupled with his sharp sense of humor and his love of family. He was an outstanding person. He loved life. He was an honest, genuine, and loyal friend and father. Some called him father. Some called him son. Some called him brother. Some called him friend. He was a superhero to so many. He will truly be missed.

Mark is survived by his wife, Acie, and his children, Alexis and Madox Hayry, Elgin, Okla.; his parents, Bruce and Pamela Hayry, Spencer; his siblings, Jeffery Hayry, Raeford, N.C., Julie (Grant) Argall, Appleton, and Gregory (Lisa) Hayry, Whitefish Bay; and his paternal grandmother, Viola Laine, Sun City, Ariz.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Harry and Pearl Engle; and his paternal grandfather, Leslie Hayry.

In lieu of flowers, those wishing to make an expression of sympathy are encouraged to do so to Mark's family to establish a memorial for the Wounded Warrior Project.
