Gergen, William #2 (25 APR 1823 - 19 DEC 1905)

William Gergen, one of Clark County’s oldest residents, passed away Tuesday afternoon at 3 o’clock at his home on the north side (Neillsville, Clark Co., Wis.). He had been ill for nearly three months with dropsy. Mr. Gergen was born in Saxonberg, Germany, April 25, 1823. His parents and four children came to America in the year 1847, the years before Wisconsin became a state, and settled near Fond du Lac in Fond du Lac County.

William was married in Racine County to Miss Elizabeth Bauchop, his present wife, on Feb. 5th, 1856, who still survives him.

Nine children came to this union; eight of them are still living - Mrs. Frances Furlong of Duluth, William A. of Minnesota, Mrs. Henry Carlton living near the city, Mrs. Herbert Visgar of Loyal and Vernie, Alfred and Elwood of this city.

Mr. Gergen served in the Civil War from early in the year 1864 until Feb. 4th, 1866, when he received an honorable discharge. In the year 1868 Mr. and Mrs. Gergen came to Clark County and purchased the 80 acre farm 5 miles northeast of the city with money Wm. Had earned in the army. The family resided at the old home in the town of Grant until April 1901 when Mr. Gergen purchased the Warner Davis property in this city, where they have since resided. He was an active member of the G. A. R. and a genial and kind-hearted friend and neighbor.

Mr. and Mrs. Gergen have been along in their home the past few years and were a devoted and loving couple beloved by all who knew them.

The sympathy of the entire community is extended to the bereaved ones. The funeral will be held Friday afternoon at 2 o’clock.
