Verhulst, Lyle A. #2 (12 JUN 1927 - 22 JAN 2009)

Lyle A. Verhulst, 81, Greenwood, formerly of Loyal, died on Thursday, Jan.22, 2009, at his home. Visitation will be held on Saturday, Jan, 31, from 9:30 a.m. until the time of a memorial service at 11 a.m., at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, Greenwood. The Rev. Terri Blomberg and the Rev. Harold Verhulst will officiate. Inurnment will take place in the Greenwood City Cemetery at a later date.

Lyle Arthur Verhulst was born on June 12, 1927, in the town of Beaver, to Clarence and Esther (nee Johnson) Verhulst. He was raised on the family farm, received his education at the Christopherson School and graduated from Greenwood High School in 1945. After completing his education, he helped his father on the farm and also worked in the harvest fields on South Dakota for a couple of years. He married Alice M. Franz on July 9, 1949, at United Lutheran Church, Greenwood. They lived in the town of Beaver and farmed until 1987. While farming, he drove truck for Pathfinder Homes in Spencer, from 1957-59, and for Roth Manufacturing, Loyal, for a couple of years. He also drove school bus for the Loyal School District for several years and the Greenwood School District for a couple of years. He worked for the town of Beaver as the grader operator for 20 years. After moving off the farm in 1987, they moved to Greenwood and he worked for Dairyland Labs/Agri-Source until retiring in the early 9090s. He was a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, where he previously served on the church council as its president; and also served on the Beaver Center School Board and served as chairman for the town of Beaver. He had many interests, but especially loved hunting, fishing, driving, dartball, square dancing, traveling, snowmobiling, watching his grandchildren’s sporting events, playing cards, and visiting people

Survivors include his wife, Alice, Greenwood; six children, Linda (Monte) Haugland, Montrose, Colo., Judi (Carl) Hoeppner, Watertown, Arlene (Michael) Harris, Holmen, Arvin (Karen) Verhulst, Loyal, Donna (Tim) Milz, Loyal, and Janice Verhulst, Fort Atkinson; 18 grandchildren, Jeff Haugland, Rachal (Matt Walsh, Kevin Haugland, Kurt Haugland, Seth (Shannon) Hoeppner, Bethany (Chris) Irish, Aaron (fiancée Michelle) Hoeppner, Nathan Hoeppner, Heather Harris, Nick Harris, Jason (Becky) Verhulst, Shawn Verhulst, Michael (Fiancée Pam) Verhulst, Adam Verhulst, Brenda (Gary) Lindner, Jennifer (Joe) Luchterhand, Jon Milz, and Jay Milz; eight great-grandchildren, Kaden, Samantha, Regan, Levi, Tysen, Dane Jakob, and Jackson; two brothers, Kenneth (Beatrice) Verhulst, Marshfield, and the Rev. Harold (Jean) Verhulst, Sioux Falls, S.D.; one sister, Corrine Verhulst, Westlake Village, Calif.; nieces, nephews, other relatives, and many friends.

Preceding him in death were his parents.
